CANADIAN PARLIAMENT - INDIGENOUS RIGHTS IN CANADA

Topic Summary

Do you know the expression finders keepers? While this has been true for many, unfortunately for the
Indigenous, it is not the case. There are three groups of Canadian Indigenous groups: the MƩtis, the Inuit
and the First Nations peoples. Even though they only form part of about 5% of the population, their
culture, language and their social systems have formed the Canada we know today. Be that as it may,
Canadian authorities forcibly separated thousands of Indigenous children from their families and made
them attend residential schools, their cultural significance and history overlooked, their basic human
rights violated. The UN has already made paramount recommendations urging Canada to change its laws
and policies regarding the Indigenous. Recent discoveries uncovered what indigenous feared was true, the
cultural genicide that is forever part of Canadian history has now been proven. Activists in Canada are
just now starting to be seen. First Nations people have promoted Cancel Canada Day in benefit of their
preferred outcome for the 2021 federal elections. Others have taken a more controversial route by
throwing red paint on important figure’s statues as a form of revenge for their actions against the
Indigenous. All in all, this situation is of critical manner, Canada must act now.
