SPECPOLĀ - AZERBAIJAN AND ARMENIA WAR

Topic Summary

The Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict started in 1988 and has not yet ended. This conflict, known as the Nagorno-Karabakh war, is considered to be the cause of an unresolved disagreement between Azerbaijan, in which the region lies, and its ethnic Armenian majority, backed by neighboring Armenia, which has been profoundly defined by the bloodshed of numerous violent conflicts between both. It has displaced millions and has killed around 40-45 thousand soldiers and civilians. As the years progressed, the geographical goal of these battles lost its prominence as a new incentive emerged: the desire to acquire one’s oil surplus. In 2020 a peace treaty was signed where Russian soldiers were sent as peacekeepers to the region of Lachin. This was supposed to be the end of the conflict but Azerbaijan troops were spotted entering Armenian territory again, sparking debate on what should be done with the border situation.
